Seeing Mother in law (over 80) negotiate updates to iOS & apps gives you a real insight into UX. For example the cancel option should not be an option. Pressing cancel dismisses the number pad & there is not clear way to bring it back! But you would never want to dismiss keypad on this screen!

The most annoying thing about mucking up my backblaze back ups and having to start again is it just trashes my BT connection. I’m still a little miffed that an accidental inherit can actually take out your backups. Why it doesn’t keep around all devices connected to your account even if inheriting at least for a few days is a mystery. I love backblaze but boy this seems like an oversight and support just didn’t seem to understand what I had done.

Games design is one of the most significant design fields of our time
Manifold, is a hybrid publishing platform created by the U of Minnesota Press and CUNY’s Graduate Centre with features supporting experimental scholarly work. The platform is designed to support digital humanities publishing and is experimenting with future publishing models, there is a lot planned for the platform and version 2 is already doing some great stuff.
However more than just an announcement about this platform, I think and hope you will be excited to see my PhD content as I publish it live on my own Manifold instance - manifold.soton.ac.uk
This week I have launched the service and reading is open access plus you now have the ability to interact with my texts via highlights and comments, these interactions are public and require you to create an account. Please feel free to share with others who you think will enjoy the text content and this process of open scholarship.

I am undertaking a part time practice based PhD to create a digital prototype platform and manifesto to enhance knowledge building around design education practice. The main goal of the platforms design is to extend collaborative learning and communities of practice from the physical across to the digital. The platform will be free software and decentralised.
The platform will be designed to support a collaborative interface and workflow that grows and changes through human input. A fluid, adaptable tool, driven by the community of practice. This tool would replace the institutional controlled Learning Management System (such as Blackboard / Moodle)
The LMS (Learning Management System), the VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) or MLE (Managed Learning Environment) are at the heart of all educational institutional mechanisms and are intended to support teaching and learning. However these platforms result in the support and extension of the administrative needs of an institute. They also support the outdated mode of Sage on the stage, tutor as expect process, rather than work with the Learning network and the power of the group they do not encourage collaborative knowledge building and creative connections.
Technology is ever present in the studios and classrooms of education and like a number of sectors we are at a point where we must decide if the future model for education is surveillance and data akin to a proximate Silicon Valley model or if Edutech has a future based around open practice, specific pedagogy and the needs of the tutors and students?
I believe we need to make the alternatives to the surveillance capitalism we see across technology and my focus is on a platform for knowledge building around practice based design processes, linked to design thinking and creative investigation.
I currently run the BA (hons) Games Design & Art programme at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton and am about to start the building phase for my PhD after an initial research phase. I have the basis for the platform set up utilising primarily open web tech including Vue.js and Couch.db, next steps revolve around data decentralisation, full encryption, data visualisation and data manipulation, user testing with design students

A fundamental factor for the project is the decentralisation of knowledge building. The platform would allow users to control and share their data via the resources being distributed and decentralised. All the current systems for education are institutional paper-replicating, top down, folder based, centralised hierarchical approaches or students own digital Personal Learning Networks (PLN) silos and does not work for knowledge sharing and building and is outdated.
My current research question is :
How could we undertake collaborative knowledge building within design education using human centred design processes to create digitally augmented ways of managing and engaging with knowledge?
I want (and need) to build a community around the project itself and to get more points of view and contribution to support the project. I am also keen to meet other people working towards similar ambitions to build better technology for people.

The card’s basic function is to pay for transport. That can be done without centralising that data, so the transport system would have to stop doing so. When it accepts digital payments, it should do so through an anonymous payment system.
Frills on the system, such as the feature of letting a passenger review the list of past journeys, are not part of the basic function, so they can’t justify incorporating any additional surveillance.
These additional services could be offered separately to users who request them. Even better, users could use their own personal systems to privately track their own journeys.

When you use Messages in iCloud your content is automatically stored in iCloud. That means they’re not included in your iCloud Backup.
Hmm bang goes getting those messages back.
Argh just swiped delete on set of iCloud messages by mistake. Was trying to delete junk message got some odd message about group conversation bam. Of course no undo! Now the delete has sync’d to the cloud looks like a day of restoring iPhone blast! 📱🤦🏻♂️

Design and the creative industries are key drivers of growth, innovation and exports. We are on the brink of an artificial intelligence revolution, where skills in immersion and AR/VR will be at a premium in industry’s quest to develop new products and services. But the education system is ill-equipped to provide the talent and skills at the rate they will be needed. In fact, entry to GCSE Design and Technology fell by 18,800 last year, and by 47,000 for creative GCSEs overall.

I would even go so far as to wager that Epic Games didn’t make Fortnite because they thought they could profit off of a pernicious logic that undergirds late capitalism.
But that we have a legitimate cultural phenomenon based on a ritualized kill-or-be-killed game style, and no one seems overly concerned about the implications, is something that I think is worth noting.

For a long time now at our campus we have had cooled and filtered tap water machines. Whenever I go to a location still using bottled water machines I just think out of date environment hell. It was a simple switch but so worth it.

CODENAME : NodeNoggin
A short presentation will introduce NodeNoggin and its purpose as a knowledge sharing platform designed to extend the physical design thinking processes from the confines of the physical studio to include a new type of collaborative digital space.
Working in small groups we will run a design thinking activity using the theme of decentralisation in the form of a physical post-it note ‘ idea generation workshop’ combined with the use of an early Minimum Viable Product of NodeNoggin.
NodeNoggin has a delightful and intuitive interface. It allows people to engage, connect and unpack knowledge in meaningful data visualisations and filters that enhance design thinking processes and create a meaningful shared collaborative environment to support and augment the design process.
The simple goal is to showcase a very early new open source platform and spatial interface designed to help design thinking processes and knowledge production. NodeNoggin attempts to encompass delightful humanity centred design principles, and hopes to take a slice of Edutech away from Silicon Valley, we are building a digital tool that is owned by the content creators and knowledge workers.
This workshop is a real world test of NodeNoggin. However the ambition of the session is to facilitate community building around NodeNoggin, both in terms of visibility but also in terms of building advocates from within the Mozilla community who may want to provide future feedback, discussion and code contributions as the project develops.
Our open ethos on the project means we will be documenting the process as much as possible and a community is something we feel the NodeNoggin must have. In preparation we have already set up an open discussion forum , youtube channel, a gitlab instance and repo’s alongside project blogs, podcast and a newsletter. We will be asking for participants to specifically follow the project, join the open spaces and spread the word to help support and improve the platform. We plan to run numerous tests of NodeNoggin specifically within Design teaching environments and so will be running future sessions and enabling participants to download and run NodeNoggin themselves for their own design projects.
We would require at least 3 participants as the session will be a design thinking exercise using both NodeNoggin and paper and pens. If over 30 arrive this will be fine as we can group people together to form teams to work the design solutions and knowledge collection. The workshop should also provide food for though on the subject of decentralisation and be of wider benefit
We have yet to test NodeNoggin in a live environment and so the number of live connections could be an issue and so we may to set a limit. The platform would hopefully at this point run as a mesh network. Participants would want a live web connection to enhance the research process.

Completely agree with this article in the Guardian on the issues of Universities offering so many unconditional places. I’ve seen a huge rise this year myself and not something we offer @gamesdesignart, students must successful pass a portfolio interview and meet our grade requirements. But I know that a lot of students have taken place’s elsewhere as it was the ‘safe' option.
We want to recruit students who are prepared to work hard and be the very best they can be. They can only do that if they feel we are the right place for them and they are studying the right subject. No one wants to see students struggling to cope or dropping out because they were pressured to choose the wrong university or the wrong course.
My advice to students is to pick the institution that’s best for you. Don’t be tempted to accept, at any price, the easy option of an unconditional offer. Follow your instincts and your ambitions
There are many courses and the course and the student must fit, aiming for what you really want is important and being swayed to take another place in case you don’t make the grades is a mistake. I try to give students tips on talking to current tutors about what grades they need for us after interview and perhaps even consider taking an Art foundation course if they don’t quite make our A-Level requirements if they really want to come on our course, better to delay than go to a course they are not 100% into or is the ‘safe’ option.

Laura Hilliger, Jess Klein and John Bevan. Doug sent me the call and recommended I apply. I worked on a digital humanities (PORTUS) project with John helping facilitate its design direction.
A broad range of design and CS skills. I can build apps both in Swift and Javascript. I have used C#, GDScript, PHP, GoLang, Ruby and numerous databases. I use design tools for making and thinking, including Adobe CS, Sketch, Marvel app and currently build with Vue.js and Snap.svg and RT databases.
My proposal is to create the platform and interface for a free software, decentralised, P2P, spatial hypertext tool deployable within creative education settings.The platform is designed to support a collaborative interface that grows and changes through human input. Most VLEs are rigid, static top down tools this is much more fluid, adaptable and driven by the community.
The platform and interface is native to digital culture built on the open web, democratic, human driven, iterative and collaborative. A visualised and spatial network of connections and clusters provide an innovative, accessible and delightful way to create and decode data, empowering individuals to connect ideas and build knowledge within communities of practice. The purpose of the tool’s design is to extend collaborative learning and communities of practice from the physical into the digital. The project I am proposing is within part of my PhD but ultimately extends into the final stages of the PhD.
My ambition is not only building the platform and interface but with the backing of the Fellowship I will widen the scope and potential reach of the project itself. The overall ambition of my PhD is to interrogate the Virtual Learning Environment specifically in teaching design education and critically examine current tech business models from Silicon Valley that are being applied to Education, especially that of data collection. To be able to do this I will build a community around the products and manifesto of the PhD and I believe the fellowship would greatly enhance and amplify this ambition. Two other UK HE courses have registered interest in the spatial interface concepts I have been researching and having Mozilla backing would give gravitas to such an engagement.
We shape our tools and, thereafter, our tools shape us.
The fellowship would support creating and testing a series of prototypes and build the platform via UX feedback, user testing and technology deployment in a way that would not be possible through my own funding. A key component is to create a truly open process, not just in terms of ensuring all the products are free software but that the process of discovery itself is open and creative commons licensed. The fellowship period would be a time to focus on community building, both in terms of technical contribution and userbase. The collaborative nature of creative work means sharing is one of the main principles embedded in the platform and the PhD both in terms of a GNU Affero General Public License and default Creative Commons licensing.
The project is to build a community not just of testers but of makers and thinkers to contribute to the platform and its ambition to support a new creative knowledge building tool. This fellowship will quickly boost the level of impact. This project aims to fix the issue that the digital tools we currently use for design education are broken: they are a replication of the physical office, files and folders. Learning is a collaborative, shared endeavour already embedded in design studio based teaching, but this model doesn’t extend to the digital tools we have. This results in digital personal learning network silos and digital repositories that provide little or no benefit to the best types of collaborative teaching and learning.
Conventional electronic documents were designed in the 1970s by well-funded conventional thinkers at Xerox PARC, who asked, “How can we imitate paper?"

The new scarcity in the internet age is attention. Since there is a surplus of information, more information flowing through our society than any of us could ever hope to process or understand, the new bottleneck on our economy is attention. We now live in an attention-based economy
These two concerns are intrinsically connected. The need to keep our attention is being transformed by the surveillance of our data. The web’s arrival ushered in a world where we could collaborate and connect people in ways that had not been imagined. This opened up the possibility for innovation in numerous fields. Projects such as Wikipedia clearly demonstrate the power of the web. The open web democratised many facets of society and asked us to question how our world would be governed and understood. Business models were flipped with new ways of thinking. Innovation appeared in attempts to help us navigate this new landscape and ever-growing wealth of information. Pioneers of the internet foresaw ways in which humans and computers would work together to tackle some of the biggest issues facing the planet yet what the web has become is now purely derived to serve these two issues. Rather than enhancing humankind the web has become adtech; it is being funneled through the view of corporations and their need to sell ads. Facebook claim to use this method to provide free access to all and thus connect people and yet Facebook decides what you see and when. Google claims to organise the wealth of information and yet money drives fake news to the top of search results. We must build alternative tools on the open web that provide ways to connect people, gather knowledge and provide true democracy outside of this neoliberal approach.
The period is an excellent fit in the next phase of my PhD. I am strongly self-directed, innovative and highly motivated to tackle this project. As a Senior Teaching Fellow I organise and plan my entire work pattern and student timetables and have managed many projects to deadline. I already have time allocated to my PhD which would be redirected at the fellowship and in place next year additional staffing and a substantially piece of internal administrative work has been completed such that this specific time frame I can given much more time and focus. As outlined in the project, the building of interfaces and testing the platform mean I will also be able to combine my time teaching in the Games Studio at Winchester School of Art with the fellowship itself. This specific open science fellowship would present a unique opportunity to bring together my research with Mozilla’s mission. It represents an excellent, timely synergistic opportunity with significant benefit to both parties.

At Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton, I was given the opportunity to lead the development of a new BA (launched Sept 2014). Validation of the BA involved the design of a new curriculum and type of learning. This was a project to create a new course from zero. In conversation with the games industry, HE educators and from my own experience it became clear that a new type of games course needed to be designed, one that was research-led and utilised thinking through making. This ambitious course is now seeing graduates obtain work in emerging games markets that didn’t exist. Students are pushing concepts and challenging the medium, alongside facilitating new ways of thinking around games as cultural objects that can engage social change.
My consultation work prior to my PhD involved helping organisations with digital technology or applying gamification to a process. This work would often culminate in research documentation to advise clients and digital prototypes. Some became finished apps, others purely showcased possible direction, such as multiscreen touch interactions to convey complex data sets, gamification of HR processes, apps for the Cultural Sector and serious games. One highly successful project I am proud to have been engaged with at a very early stage is a project that became Signly.

I was commissioned over a few years to undertake work testing and building various AR based interactions combing various tech. The final concept and idea to marry this tech with sign language content was not my idea, however the work I undertook in both prototyping and consultation had a major influence on the direction of what become Signly.

Collaboration is the only effective way to solve problems. The PhD is driving for Humanity Centred Design and the launch of the Delightful Design Manifesto. Delight not just in terms of use but also in terms of ownership - that of the data and the ability to contribute both in terms of feedback but also in ability to change the source code. A Cooperative approach will be required for a Humanity Centred Design process.
Communities of practice are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.

After my mac had a melt down and lost it, I only really lost a lot of preferences/ caches however oddly my Firefox profile was corrupted, this had a lot of tabs open and I mean a lot! Stuff I was ‘working’ on, stuff to read later, stuff I just hadn’t closed, now I did try to restore from @backblaze but couldn’t (need to ask them why) however I am now on a mission to close tabs when done and save tabs to pinboard /pocket as needed as reference as I have to say less tabs makes Firefox much happier and much quicker. Of course my profile may have had other legacy stuff and maybe old add ons, but with my Firefox Account all the important stuff, my cross device history is safe. Lets see if I can keep these tabs under control…

Amazing end to my stressful week my MacBook Pro (2016) appears to have corrupted its drive. Edging closer to a full Back Blaze restore nightmare. Finder went mad and disk util said snapshot meta data was invalid. Cleared dateless snap shots. Run disk until in Single users says disk ok. But it’s not. Safe mode now booting. Restore maybe next. Having one of those weeks.

Totally agree and was only taking about this last week a focus on wages as the measure of University education is fundementally missing the point of University education.
Linda Drew, the vice-chancellor of Ravensbourne - the UK’s newest university - warned that using graduate salaries to measure the success of higher education is a “cold, grim way” of looking at it. She argued that the current government emphasis on Stem subjects neglects the fact that many industrial and tech companies value input from the arts and humanities for the new, creative perspectives they bring.
A neat way to quickly organise your to dos into a little more detail, could easily be mixed with Kanban using any board system like Trello or Glo boards.
I have to wonder how London actually functions 4 days travelling and I think only 1 train has been on schedule… I can only hope it’s just I happen to find the bad trains @swtrains

My good friend has Spotify & I have Apple Music I have to have the Spotify iOS app to be able to send her links to records I think she would like, this is pretty terrible due to no open options, and no scripts via IFTTT or workflow to do a search and convert are available. But wow recently opening Spotify it is totally confusing if you want to share a record/ LP its all about playlists from what I can tell.
Thankfully Apple Music has not gone down this route. I think the Album is important and the order selected by the Artist is important that’s how I want to hear my music so please Apple if your doing one thing well in Apple Music it is by ensuring Albums are a thing. Thank you. 🎧

The Leftfield room has some really interesting games, rock paper shotgun room had some great fun and custom controller games. One on which a friend can literally adjust variables in the game such as zoom level and speed ! Was hilarious. Both bigger indie rooms also awesome. The Unreal room was not my cuppa tea and continued to reenforce my feelings that unreal isn’t an indie dev engine really. Meet some Godot Fans too 😄👍

Any of my “followers” will be acutely aware that I have been going on about privacy and the invasion of this by corporate Silicon Valley for a little while now. Their albeit legal but unethical use of data mining has become the sole business model of the vast majority of internet technologies we use. Yet I have accounts on almost all of the services, my wife would say;
Get out, leave us alone and shut the door behind you..In fact she has numerous times. We only recently refriended on Facebook.
I was I have to admit an addict to signing up to any new internet service which is why I have accounts nearly everywhere, back in the early days of the web this was pretty exciting and something I felt compelled to do. Also it was the one way to secure that precious username, some accounts lay very dormant and some I still use more regularly.
One such service is Facebook, over the years friends and family have slowly joined Facebook. My many attempts prior to this to try and get family to consider sharing online was well met normally with “why would I want to do that” Even robust and Friendly cross platform private services such as Flickr or such never worked, the technical barriers albeit low still were still to high, it was only for the nerds, of course this did change not rapidly but slowly. So to be fair it is nice to see more images, comments and links from family and friends via Facebook.
Over time Facebook adjusted its timeline and went from a chronological based timeline to an algorithmic timeline, in fact all the popular social network services have ended up doing this, there has been some discussion that this is the only way to try and curate the amount of interactions we have to deal with. Its a vicious catch 22 situation.
In 2014 media focussed on Facebook using this manipulated timeline to see if it effected peoples feelings and well sure enough it did, but they did this without letting anyone know, they played with peoples feelings to see what happened. The reality of this experiment could have resulted in suicide. Medical trials are governed by a sizeable amount of legal requirements and opt in details, yet it seemed we had all agreed in the terms and conditions that experiments like this where allowed via the Facebook platform. Of course this was and is just the tip of the iceberg, there are many experiments facebook have undertaken based on different segments of their users which have had real impact, such as changes to the news feed based on geolocation which amplified fake news. The latest revelation is that 3rd party use of the Facebook data has had impacts on the outcome of western elections as one company Cambridge Analytica again manipulated the timelines of friends of friends by gathering a wealth of data and injecting specific types of adverting and curated news in the timelines of many users, a lot who didn’t event use the app that was involved, they happened to have a friend that did. None of these stories and I only pick a few are a surprise, I understand the model of business operated here is surveillance capitalism.
In a talk about making games, one question I often pose is that understanding that Google and Facebook are not technology companies but advertising companies changes your understanding of Games such as Candy Crush and Ingress.
So we know Facebook harvests all the data you put into the site and we also know they use tracking to follow you out of facebook and around the web, and in and out of Apps. In fact we know that facebook also saves things you thing you discard, another study looking at self-censorship (2013) and recent archives reveals lots of data that was never posted (including videos). All of these actions, tracking, storing, saving with you knowing is to ensure they can better curate your timeline which is so you spend more time in the Facebook eco system itself, as the more time spent on Facebook the more targeted the advertising can be and the more money that an be charged for that adverts spot. For some people Facebook is the web.
So every often I would cut back on direct Facebook interactions. I have Firefox on my Mac and iOS set to block all trackers and have Firefox Focus Blocker turn on for iOS Safari, I use 3rd parties for other browsers on Mac and iOS including Ghostery (although I now understand Ghostery sells data to advertisers) andind.ie’s Better. I also use 1.1.1.1 a privacy based DNS. I now only cross post my content to Facebook and Twitter. All the content I produce is stored where I have control over the data and it will not get removed due to changes in Terms and Conditions. However Facebook and Twitter are still gathering my data due to cross posting. Occasionally Facebook considers my cross posts from Micro.blog as Spam.
Instagram is currently the worst offender in that their API does not allow any cross posting from any another source than the official app. So I currently post from instagram and use Ownyourgram to cross post and thus store the original content in micro.blog. All my photos are also uploaded to iCloud and Flickr. Videos don’t cross post so I use an IFTTT workflow that save these direct to dropbox. Twitter has recently killed off 3rd party app integration. So you have to ask why would these free services continue to allow any 3rd party style integration going forward?
Actively deleting accounts is hard to do. Being less active on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Whats App is relatively easy to do but deleting you account loses you access to your friends and is thus much harder. Facebook knows this. Its called The Network Effect. Personally Instagram is one of the hardest for me to be less active on as I use it for both for myself and promoting the Games course I run, however since changes to the timeline and the like anxiety I have, I certainly will move away from the platform, I thought it would be hard with Twitter but that proved not to be the case.
So I can recommend taking a look at some alternatives such as micro.blog (twitter) Signal (what’s app) and Sunlit (instagram). As for a closed group sharing platform beyond a messaging app this is a little trickier but a perhaps a private Mastodon instance would be the way to go, although pretty tech heavy to setup. I know some work is being done by the awesome Aaron Parecki that could allow you bring private blogs together in his app called Monocle which looks very interesting and could easily allow for small communities to come together in one space privately.
Ill be slowly reducing my time on all services and will see how long I continue to syndicate to them, so please see my blog , follow me on micro.blog and start conversations with me on discourse.
I am pleased the idea of the indie web has seen more focus by the wider web community in the last few years, it makes total sense to me and I am glad things are finally starting to come together and may well help bring the web further away from the Silicon Valley data monetisation model.

I get anxious when in real life friends don’t like an Instagram photo of mine, especially if it related to work I’m undertaking, I wonder why they didn’t spend 2 seconds pressing the heart, did they even see my photo? Don’t they know I like to get a like. It makes me worry.
Sometimes I would have conversations about how many followers I had on Twitter and Instagram. Even though I know that many can be bots or that I you can game ways to gain followers. But sometimes I did care, why has he got more followers? I’ve been on twitter for years longer. It made me question my content. Should I have been more canny?
So more and more I really appreciate that micro.blog doesn’t show or support any of this. People can favourite posts but you don’t know, you can’t tell how many people are following you. In fact the delay in extra JavaScript in headings and footers means I can’t install Matomo (analytics software thats not Google) and you know what the more I think about it the more I don’t want to now.
When someone mentions me on micro.blog the interaction is so much more meaningful than a little heart, thumbs up or a like. Even a RT / Boosted style posting is not possible and so this is normally a mention with effort, real interaction.

3rd Party apps on twitter that survived to this day did very well after twitter changed its API back in 2012. I always thought that those that survived seemed to have found a loop hole and some had to request special excemption from limits set out by the new API. This move was to push people onto the official client and website to provide a more “consistent” twitter experience. Even embedding your own tweets in your own web page became a serious hassle, meaning the content started to become Silo’d almost overnight. So 3rd party use was never going to last but the final day has now really arrived..
I had been struggling to keep up in any meaningful way with twitter for a while and last summer I was toying with curating numerous lists to survive, a conversation with other twitter friends suggested it was the only way anyone was dealing with twitter. I felt slightly better that this was a common issue. However it was all a bit of a kludge and since the release of micro.blog I don’t post from twitter anymore and rarely catch up on anything but @ mentions and DMs. Twitters revenue plans were always against 3rd party apps. The recently released Twitterific for Mac backed on Kickstarter will have just about seen a year of usefulness.
I’ve always use 3rd party software, the awesome Twittelator was the first I used for a long time with its customisation but with the API changes it didn’t make it so I swapped to Tweetbot on iOS and macOS, the official clients were always terrible even before the adverts and promoted tweet nonsense.
Yet another reason to grab onto the indieweb and own your data. For an awesome twitter like experience I suggest you get on micro.blog today. Not only does it have a social network timeline but every single post is a blog entry on your own domain and the data is all yours.

It’s clear this was not a Facebook data breach because the data was not stolen or hacked, it was handed to Cambridge Analytica the same way it is handed to any Facebook API partner. It’s worse than a breach, it’s Standard Procedure.

Am pulling together my own micro blogging talk for an Experimental Publishing module here at Winchester School of Art and am focusing on a brief introduction around the issue of control over the web.
The problem is the dominance of one search engine, one big social network, one for microblogging. We don’t have a technology problem, we have a social problem.(Berners-Lee, 2016)
This is then followed by a basic history of blogging 97 - circa 2012/13 , covering basic tools such as open diary, blogger, live journal, typepad, wordpress, tumblr , twitter. Interspersed with the fact through the web , blogs gave everyone a voice, and will do a little bit on twitter and political changes (Arab spring etc.) This is for context.
I’ll then head back to advertising and peoples current views into the web and why indie web / micro.blog / POSSE / owning a domain is becoming important. Ill probably drag in recent Guardian and such articles on peoples concerns of Facebook. Ending with the fact that if you want to publish on the web which is probably the most powerful platform for communication on the planet. The need to understand the web is in a bad place right now and the status quo of Google, Facebook, Twitter is not good at all in this regard. And encourage them to check out micro.blog / indieweb…
So any resources / links / things the microblog community think I must mention, either in terms of tech or seminal moments. Feel free to comment on my connected discourse topic or reply on micro.blog.

One proposal coming forward in the UK is to lower Arts course fees based on the median wage being lower after graduation. This divide is another out dated mode that tries to split creativity out of the ongoing promotion of STEM.
Having creative graduates, or “graduates of the arts”, pay less for their degrees would create a perception that the subjects they studied are less likely than others to lead to successful careers, which would undervalue the huge economic impact made by the creative industries.
I think education should be provided by the state to anyone that wishes to undertake it but a reduction in fees for the Arts only would not only devalues creativity but have a huge impact on our ability to deliver world class education.
I firmly believe that some of the best education comes via the Arts and that creativity is required in all fields. It will only be through creative thinking that many of the worlds problems could be solved.
The Creative industries is the fastest growing sector in the UK and continues to grown faster then the economy, in fact at twice the rate in 2017.
The ongoing UK view that art, design and creativity are less important than other subjects is backwards thinking and will in the long term be hugely damaging to an island that seems even more inclined to cut it self off from the global economy that will need creative and design thinking in all areas.
Disciplines must work together. I have an MA in Art, Design & Internet Techologies and am studying a design part time PhD in Web Science. I see no divide between science, art, design and creativity.

The inability to set your own default apps for mail, browsing and podcasting still annoys the heck out of me on iOS. Plenty of browsing I struggle to relocate as I use Firefox everywhere but some browsing happens in iOS Safari due to forced defaults 🙁
